Are we being harsh on people with previous drug offences? Should they not be employed? or should they be given a second chance?
Personally I wouldnt trust them. What do you all think? |

I think the old adage of "leopards changing spots" springs to mind. Anybody who has previously abused substances should be precluded from the post of Prison Officer. Temptation could be too much for them and they may not only use again if presented with that situation, but may be coerced into trafficking for prisoners. So, no......they shouldn't be given a 2nd chance. _________________ Excuses are like backsides my dear friend...We've all got 'em....and they all STINK!! |

Hey
Just my two'pence worth,
With the drugs side of things, i do think circumstances should be taken into consideration, most youngsters have at some point done or taken something or other....
if they were silly enough to get caught with it, well.... that is down to them and should expect some of the consequences! .....but if it was a caution from years back, most people do grow up and change, and as long as they are no longer party too... perhaps they should given the chance and not held to something that has been in the past? _________________ Sanity is just madness put to good use!! |

| I think that maybe as part of the medical they should administer drug tests. That way those with cautions can prove they have changed and those that never got caught by the law will be weeded out to. |

Hmmmm? Not really a question of "silly enough to get caught with it" so much as "stupid enough to have done it in the furst place". I agree that people grow up and can change in those respects. However, people who abuse substances should not (in my personal opinion) be allowed to work in prisons. That was, after all, the original question posed.
For "furst" see the original Saxon word in the Collins Oxford dictionary, "first". Meaning; being before all others with respect to time, order, rank, importance, etc. _________________ Excuses are like backsides my dear friend...We've all got 'em....and they all STINK!! |

NINE serving West Mercia police officers have criminal convictions against their names.
WORCESTER NEWS
4th February 2008
A Freedom of Information request by your Worcester News revealed that of the nine, five convictions were received while the police constables were employed with the force, which covers Worcestershire and Herefordshire and currently employs a total of 2,489 officers of different ranks.
One conviction was for harassment, another for having no car insurance, and three for driving without due care and attention.
As of September 2007, four more already had convictions prior to their appointment with West Mercia. They include one for criminal damage, another for taking a motor vehicle without consent and two for public order offences.
====================================
20 December 2006
Police officers in the East Midlands were convicted of criminal offences over four years on an average of nearly one a month, the BBC has learned.
Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that 45 officers received convictions for 70 crimes from November 2002 to November 2006.
Hundreds of others were fined for speeding or parking illegally.
Supt Heather Long of Lincolnshire Police said officers who committed crimes were dealt with robustly.
Jobs lost
The figures from Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire show that 28 sexual offences, eight of driving after taking alcohol or drugs and five physical assaults were committed by police officers.
Six Lincolnshire policemen were convicted of disorder after they verbally abused a woman on a train in April.
Most of the 45 officers involved have now lost their jobs but the figures show that 16 have been allowed to carry on working. |

Baddass
Perhaps i came acroos a bit worng
I aggree with your correction of " silly enough" to "stupid enough " quite right. it was just through some of the threads were some of members have had ity held against them, and agian i do believe some of the circumstances should be taken into consideration, like smoking the occasionall joint whilst at college etc........
but as for the originall question and the post just put up by Falkor... to Abuse drugs or have a conviction were you are in a role were you are supposed to be setting an example, your quite right and should not be allowed! _________________ Sanity is just madness put to good use!! |

Parking offences can be excused but harassment and drink driving etc.. they should lose their jobs. I think think that any security job I.E police, Prison service etc should only employ people unblemished records. Anyone else can go in the army and work on the front line if they want to do good for our country. I find that people who have done drugs will usually continue to use them no matter how rare the occassion. This bla·sé attitude towards canabis gets right up my nose.
Keep em out. |

Padlack, for someone who protests some much about drugs and their effects, and claims to have never tried drugs, you seem to know an awful lot about them!! |

I like to think of myself as an educated person tilts. Thats why I was clever enough not to get involved even when I found myself in places were they were freely available. Unlike you I was intelligent enough to do as I was told in Grange Hill and just say NO.
